Lee Jeans - Company History

In 1889, Henry David Lee founded Lee Mercantile Company. He opened his first garment factory in Salina, Kansas where he produced dungarees and jackets.

The first Lee "overall" was created in 1920, which laid the foundation for Lee's early growth. Complementing the creation of the "Overall", the Buddy Lee doll was launched for promotional use, but quickly became a popular play doll.

Throughout the 1920s, Lee Company introduced many new concepts to manufactured denim. The most notable concept was the creation of the zipper fly, which has provided convenience and has become a denim jean staple.

Lee Jean Company dove into casual wear in the 1950s, which caused immense expansion. And, the Lee brand continued to expand throughout the 1960s, distributing Lee jeans to 51 countries.

Development of the Lee Co. fashion lines continued throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. In 1996, Lee launched Lee National Denim Day® in support of breast cancer research.

Today, Lee Company is still growing and enhancing Lee jeans, Lee pants, and Lee shorts to offer the best fits, styles, finishes, and features for the genuine Lee clothing customer!
