In 1853, during the California Gold Rush, a 24-year-old immigrant named Levi Strauss, moved to San Francisco with the intention of opening a dry goods business. Levi Strauss saw the gold miners' need for a pair of pants strong enough to last.
Levi Strauss started making durable pants for the miners, out of canvas, he had brought to make tents, and wagon covers. Later, Levi Strauss substituted a twilled cotton cloth from France. The fabric later became known as denim and the pants were nicknamed blue jeans, based on the blue indigo dye that was applied over the face of the twill.
In 1873, Levi Strauss & Company began using the modified "V" pocket stitch design. Levi Strauss and Nevada tailor David Jacobs co-patented the process of putting rivets in pants for strength.
The Men's Levi's ® 501 "Shrink-To-Fit" jean is the closest to the original Levi Strauss jean. It still has the button fly, and the 8%, "shrink-to-fit" nature.
Later, sanforizing denim was introduced. Sanforizing is a method of stretching and manipulating the denim cloth in the factory prior to any washing so that any shrinking during future washes will be minimalized. Sanforized jeans will shrink approximately 3%.
Today, many jeans are "prewashed" which further reduces shrinkage, and add an addition speed in having your jeans comfortable after only one washing.
