The top[s are too large to wear inside pant legs. I do not like the split tops.

Rated 5 out of 5 by TopHandTuck One of Few Styles Approved by NCOWS & SASS for Cowboy Action Shooting
I own this pair and can admit to ordering one size larger than my everyday shoes. They are indeed a russet color that is not by any means shiny, but are true to the designs of the latter half of the 1800's. The only difference is the expandable calf area to accommodate the legs of today's modern man who has had a more steady diet of fast food and perhaps more biscuits and gravy than he should have eaten over the years. Men of that long ago era worked physically harder than most of us desk-pilots do today and we therefore overall have a few extra pounds in this area which must be taken into consideration.
Having competed in NCOWS's competitions I can tell you this organization is very focused upon the authenticity of the members' costuming, including everything from their boots to their hats and everything in between. This boot qualifies for both governing organizations.
They are extremely comfortable to wear and yes these styles were worn back then with one's pants legs stuffed inside them. Denim jeans were relegated to the miners of California and were NOT an everyday garment worn by the working cowboys despite what Gene and Roy wore on the silver screen and on TV today.
These boots are tough and are the product of reversed engineering from a surviving relic of that period. All are true to the original design with the one exception to allow for the larger calf diameters needed for modern cowboys, or wannabe cowboys.
So, if you're in the market for the real McCoy, square toed western boot like your great-great-grandfather wore, you have found one example. You will also need to purchase the taller boot socks to protect your legs from chafing. Sheplers has them in stock online. Oh yeah, they look great with spurs on too!
Happy Trails, partner!

Rated 4 out of 5 by CubularCowboy Nice boots for the price - order 1/2 size bigger
I like the boots OK - I hoped they would be shiny like in the pictures - they are kind of a matte finish. Also they are smaller than other boots I bought in the same size. Overall I am pleased and could not find them anywhere else.

Rated 4 out of 5 by tdsshop Nicely made boot, but too small ,order a size up
Ordered this boot and was impressed by the workmandship and quality. I like higher shafted boots, but had to return as I make the mistake of ordering my shoe size. Probably need to order up at least one size to get foot thru the shaft and push down on the bottom and have it fit. Had to send it back but may order again in larger size soon and hope it solves sizing problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by CCountry Very Happy with the Boots
I followed the suggested sizing chart and the boots fit just fine. They are the most comfortable boot I have ever owned. I like the tall boot and could not be happier. I have priced this and similar boots on line and you have the best price. Thank you so much!

Rated 5 out of 5 by JLB47 Good boot, tall shaft
These boots fit well but are extremely tall. Best for anyone who wants to wear their boot with the pant leg tucked in, which I don't, so I had to send them back. If you don't mind a shaft up to your knee, these are very comfortable boots.
