Rated 5 out of 5 by Tarsands A must for the western TV & movie nostalgia seeker
This cookbook isn't only a cowboy's guide to good food, it's also a nostalgic trip through the hey days of western movies, T.V. and song. You won't get 5 star meal ideas but you'll be amazed at the simplicity of a good feast at the hands of the ladies and gents that built the cornerstones of frontier entertainment. From Agarn's Corn Pudding to Waylon's Florentine Soup. Even Jack Elam's got a food tip. Kinda.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Highlander Great book if you like basic recipes
I especially liked the western genre information in the book. However, I think that it is regretful to insert Leonard Maltin's mug and not include the famous western cowboys like Cisco Kid and Poncho, Stewart Grainger, Red Ryder and Little Beaver [both], and others.
Some of the recipes were completely useless having no portion control. Another comment, while not negative, is that many of the recipes are really quite basic....I believe that it was so because food was basic in the early years of the West. Foodstuffs had to be carried...so only the essentials were taken.
Of particular value are the wild game [venison, etc.] recipes.
Although I do recommend the book, I, personally, was a bit disappointed in the lack of BBQ recipes that were/ are still used by some ranchers...i.e. burying meat in a hole and then baking it or special-type Bar-B-Q's.
